Cheater no.1: Mårten Wikström

Mårten Wikström
Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Helsinky, a Professor of the Academy of Finland and former cheater at chess.com

This untrustworthy future liar and cheater became a member of Chess.com in December 2008. Needles to say, at the beginning he played honestly and - badly. Unfortunately, perhaps another idiot gave him "cool" advice to fire up chess program and cheat anyway, because "it cannot be detected". It is interesting how this delusion is widespread among cheaters and such ignorants. After a bitter altercation with experienced chessplayers, Wikstrom closed his account to avoid shame and being exposed in the Hall of Shame.

  1. Quite an accusation, but where is the evidence for cheating?

  2. Polar_Bear provided me with the evidence on my request. He found that on the basis of 24 games of mine that he had chosen my moves fitted his computer's 3 best moves 88.76% of the time. This put me 3.18 standard errors above the percentage expected from his benchmark (early CC championship matches). The gentleman allowed me only 2.5 SE deviation, so he concluded that I was guilty of cheating in my chess.com games as "wikstrom". Finally, in his view the probability of me being honest is 1/543. Not bad ;-)

  4. I should add that the originators of the Top3 method at RedHotPawn concluded on the basis of their extensive research that 85% was the upper limit, but increased it to 90% to account for various errors and to ensure a minimum of false positives, which when made public would be devastating for the individual.

I experienced much ridicule and harrassment by members of chess com, which I now see is repeated on this site and which makes me sad. I wish that the Blogger would realise how much damage he is causing, not only to many honest individuals, but also to the chess com site.

    Sincerely, Marten Wikstrom

  5. Well, it can be safely asserted that cheaters do more than their fair share of damage. Certainly more than a person who just points them out.

That is definitely true, but only if the person who "just points them out" has made the right judgement

    Account officially closed for cheating.

  8. Yes, and it looks likely after closing account "wikstrom" by himslef, he tried to sneak back, but he was later banned: http://www.chess.com/members/trophy_view?id=3148671
Account "wikstrom" was changed from "closed" to "closed for cheating" on my request, because I had been harassed by a lawyer hired by Wikström.

Having closed my wikstrom account due to overwhelming harrassment, I immediately started a new one as Phobetrix. No sneaking here whatsoever - it was completely understood and accepted by the chess.com officials at the time (Kohai). Several months later Phobetrix was suddenly "closed for cheating" - a lightning from a clear sky to me and to many others on the site.
To advertise now that the "wikstrom" account was closed for cheating is another dishonesty and a huge lie - that is not what happened!
My lawyers in Prague do not harass poor Zeman, but only want to make him responsible for his claims.

  10. Wikström: I feel tempted to inform your employer directly via e-mail about your lies and dishonest behaviour. Btw, your lawyer did the same to me: he sent e-mail copy to my boss. In my opinion, people with low moral standards like yours shouldn't teach students nor represent science despite your undisputed past achievements. Or maybe, you really feel this treatment as unfair, because you suffer with some mental disorder and can't remember your cheating. If so, then sorry, poor ill old man, however in such case you should retire anyway.

  11. I think we will have to let your continuous insults speak for themselves

    Sincerely,

    Marten Wikstrom

  12. Yep. Facts speak for themselves already. Caught cheating by chess.com (twice!!), thoroughly analyzed (at least twice) by sound top3 methodology and found positive, plus several expert opinions... and still in denial. Thus -> article above = truth, Marten Wikstrom = cheater and cheeky liar. No insult whatsoever, only truth.

  13. I just stumbled in here by accident, but I must say that I am surprised by the level of hate and need to abuse displyed on this blog. What happened to you Mr Zeman? What made you so desperately in need of hurting others? I don't understand it...such a sick idea, let me accuse as many as I can to cause them to be socially hurt? And this is people you don't even know....sad times these......Hope you get something more useful to do in your life.

    Best Regards
    "Worried"

  14. Dear "Worried", obviously you don't understand the seriousness of damage these people have committed to chess. Or do you endorse steroids in athletics, cycling, bodybuilding?

  15. For me, there is no use even to try defending myself on a blog that is controlled by Zeman. Anything I say will be either deleted or edited. So, I restrict my comment to saying that I thoroughly regret having started playing chess at chess.com using my own name. Zeman is now using this "upper hand" in his fanatic campaign against cheaters to harass some of those players whose identity he can verify. His methodology to detect cheaters is - of course - impeccable (at least in his own view). Yet, it is based on binomial statistics (like the statistical rules in tossing a coin), where the fundamental prerequisite is that a single sample (here, a chess move) must not be influenced (biased) by previous samples (tosses, chess moves). Anyone, who has played chess knows that this prerequisite is not fulfilled in this game - almost all moves in a chess game are strongly influenced by the previous moves, that is - in fact - what is called tactical planning.

I did consult a lawyer in Prague to get to the bottom of this, but it turns out that my chances to win a court case in the Czech republic are very limited. More crucially, the lawyer fees are astronomical, so I have decided to leave it altogether.

    Sincerely,

    Marten Wikstrom

  16. Wikstrom, my last words for you: Your case is CLOSED. You were found cheating by at least four authorities, beyond any reasonable doubt each time. You are online chess cheater; this verdict is definitive. I am fed up with your mendacious blather and angry at you for your intention to enforce your improper desires by legal action. You are not welcome here and your further posts will be deleted.

  17. Polar Bear, well done here. If the guy cheats at online video games, he probably steals his grad students work as well.

  18. Dear anonymous, no, we didn't talk about cheating at video games. We talked about disgraceful contempt for online chess rules and breaking own promises. And yes, I don't trust cheaters, in my opinion they shouldn't be employed as teachers, judges or policemen, because of their lack of moral credit.
